Saturday Night... PHC time

Well, I didn't get my weekly e-mail from my sister telling me what Garrison Keiler's program would be tonight...  (Cynthia...  where are you?).  But we found it on PBS (the Presque Isle station) the first weekend we were here.  AND...  Betty, the president of the Friends group went to Tanglewood a couple of weeks ago to actually be in the audience of Prairie Home Companion and told us what a treat it is to see this show in person.

Hey..  remember I wrote that my Grandmother Wallace was named Cynthia Ann after Cynthiana, KY?  Well, my sister and one of my nieces are also named Cynthia....  a lovely name....  and you know... even if our Grandma Wallace was long gone before we were born, there is still a feeling of continuity because of the name.

Okay...  moving right along...

Not a whole lot to write about...

Saw this bald eagle this morning...
Isn't he/she magnificent?

Bill spotted this bird flying over our rig....  We jumped in the truck and headed to the lake area.  Sure enough, there it was...  perched high in an old spruce tree.
Never fails to fill me with awe!

We saw 3 bear this morning...  all too fast for these old fumble fingers....

And then we saw this fawn running down the road...
I don't know where "Mom" was....  but this little guy was pretty sprightly...

We were on our way over to the Willard Road...
 Vandalism....
Bill...  to the rescue!  Take down the old...
 Put up the new...
Looks good again!
But... damn!  Why do people have to be so destructive?

Okay...  on to the next subject....
The Friends group had a "hands dirty" day today...  the group was to meet at 9am and work until about noon.
The project was to scrape the old peeling paint off the historic guard house and roll on some fresh paint.

Well...  only 1 person showed up to work.
The president of the friends...  who is one heck of a hard worker!
(I told her I wouldn't post her picture)

One of my "things" is...
I don't like to paint
Well, that's become a joke as almost everywhere Bill & I go to volunteer we end up painting
Something....
I've painted Blue Goose signs...
I've painted Lincoln Highway Signs...
I've painted gates....
I've painted offices......
Heck... I've done a pretty decent job of painting myself...

Nevertheless...
I said I wasn't going to paint this weekend...

HA!

Okay...  I didn't paint, but there was no way I was going to stand by and watch Betty scrape paint all by herself.

Bill and I scraped until lunchtime...

And it didn't kill me....
I survived!

I only quit because I wanted to open the Visitor Center.
We usually don't open the VC on Saturday, but this weekend there is a Landspeed Competition going on on the old airstrip next door  to the refuge.

Last year a woman broke the record by going OVER 300 MPH on a motorcycle!!!!!

Anyway, I wanted to keep the VC open, so we had an early lunch and made it up to the VC before noon.

Paid off...  only 2 visitors, but they spent $35 buying items in the Nature Store...  and of course, I always enjoy the visitors...

I closed up shop at 3pm....  I like to go to 4pm mass at Holy Rosary in Caribou...  so...  that was my day.

I had mixed feelings about this last photo..
Yep!  A Butt Shot!
But...  an eagle?
Our National Bird?
Is this disrespectful?
Heck, it's Saturday night...  PHC still has 15 minutes to go...  I can tell what stories and show what photos I want.

That's All For Today!

  1. That's a good description--those bald eagles fill me with awe, too. Saw two the other day right by the road.

  2. Nice shots of those Bald Eagles. Hey - your Saturday nights are every bit as exciting and nail biting as the ones Paulette and I have.

  3. I could live without those ground races... Strange thing to have right next to your idyllic place. Incredible shots of the eagle... yes, even that butt shot! Like you, I would prefer scraping to painting. I love to paint, but I hate to have to stay within the lines!
